Here's what is happening in our community-
Earlier this week, a major security vulnerability, the “Heartbleed” Vulnerability was disclosed in a widely used component to secure Internet Communications. “Heartbleed” is a vulnerability found in some versions of the Open SSL Software Library and is a software component that facilitates encryption for some secure websites. This vulnerability is estimated to have affected 60% of all Internet Sites.
While this does not directly affect consumers, it may affect many consumers “indirectly”. You may need to take action to protect yourself from this indirect risk. The devices at direct risk are directly accessible from the internet.
All Modern Browsers (Internet Explorer 7 and above) support stronger ciphers, which means only users of older browsers (pre-date IE7) are more likely to be impacted. Microsoft no longer supports IE6, so no users should be currently using the IE6 browser version.
However, our members may be at risk through the use of other network providers for both business and personal accounts. Sites such as www.Yahoo.com and www.okcupid.com have been confirmed as vulnerable. Many companies require or suggest customers change their password after they have corrected the issue. If you change the password before the problem is resolved, you may need to change your password again. As with any password change request, it is advisable to validate the authenticity of the password change request. This issue would create an opportunity for criminals to mimic legitimate password reset notices with malicious links designed to steal passwords or to infect computers with viruses/malware.
